Local SEO in Ireland and GEO: how search is changing

Google Business Profile, reviews and local links still matter. Here is how AI search changes things and what to do about it.

Local SEO is still one of the best value things an Irish business can invest in. When someone searches “café near me” or “physio Letterkenny”, Google decides which local businesses to show, and the basics of local SEO decide whether that is you.

At the same time, the way people search is changing. AI answers in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity now sit between your customer and your website. This post covers both: the local SEO foundations that still matter, and how GEO (generative engine optimisation) fits on top.

Local SEO in Ireland still matters

Most local searches end with a call, a visit or a booking. For a restaurant in Dublin, a tour operator in Donegal or a gym in Dublin 18, showing up in the map results can matter more than ranking anywhere else.

Here is what we focus on first.

Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing people see. Google says complete, accurate information helps your profile show for relevant searches. Keep it complete and current:

  • The right primary category, plus a small number of relevant secondary categories.
  • Accurate opening hours, including holiday hours.
  • Real photos of your premises, team and work.
  • Services or menu items listed clearly.
  • Regular posts and updates so the profile looks alive.

NAP consistency

NAP means name, address and phone number. Google asks for your real world business name and an accurate address and phone number. They should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, local directories and any industry listings.

Small differences, like an old phone number or “Rd” on one site and “Road” on another, make it harder for search engines to be confident they are looking at the same business.

Reviews

Reviews help people choose you, and Google lists review count and ratings as part of prominence, one of its local ranking factors. Ask happy customers at the right moment, make it easy with a short link, and reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and helpful way.

Location pages

If you serve several towns or counties, give each important area its own useful page. Not a copy and paste job with the town name swapped, but real detail: who you work with there, how to find you, local examples of your work.

Local links

Links from local sources carry weight, and Google counts links to your business as part of prominence too. Think local news sites, sports clubs you sponsor, chambers of commerce, tourism bodies and event listings. Our work on Go Visit Donegal, built with our partners at bigO, shows how much a strong local network of businesses and links can do for a region.

What GEO means and why it matters now

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It means making your business easy for AI tools to understand, trust and cite when they answer questions.

This is no longer a future thing in Ireland. Google rolled out AI Overviews to Irish users in 2025, giving an AI written summary at the top of many results. In October 2025 Google also started rolling out AI Mode in Ireland, a separate tab where people can ask longer questions, follow up, and get answers with links to sources.

Outside Google, many people now use ChatGPT search and Perplexity to research purchases, compare options and find local recommendations.

What changes for businesses

  • Questions are longer. People ask full questions, such as “what is a good family friendly restaurant in Dublin 2 with gluten free options”.
  • Answers come first. Some people get what they need from the summary and never click.
  • Being cited is the new ranking. If an AI answer mentions and links to you, that is valuable visibility.

SEO is not dead. It is changing.

AI answers are built from the web. The tools still need pages to read, businesses to recommend and sources to trust. The work that makes good SEO also makes good GEO, with a few shifts in emphasis. Google itself says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Give clear answers

Write pages that answer real questions plainly. Put the answer near the top, then the detail. Use headings that match how people ask, and keep paragraphs short. AI tools pick up clear, quotable statements far more easily than vague marketing copy.

Use structured data

Schema markup tells machines exactly what a page is about. For local businesses, the most useful types are usually LocalBusiness (or a more specific type like Restaurant), Organization, Product, Event and Review. It removes guesswork about your address, hours, prices and services. Make sure it matches what visitors can see on the page.

Keep your entity consistent

Search engines and AI tools think in entities: your business as a thing, with a name, location, owner, services and reputation. The more consistent those facts are across your site, your Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories, the more confident they are about recommending you.

Earn mentions and citations

AI answers lean on sources that are trusted and specific. Local press coverage, reviews on several platforms, partner sites and helpful guides all increase the chance you get mentioned.

Make your site easy to read

Fast pages, clean code and content that loads without heavy scripts help both people and bots. This is one reason we build our search optimised websites on a lean Elementor Pro and ACF Pro setup, with structured content that can be marked up properly.

A practical local SEO and GEO checklist

  1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile.
  2. Fix your name, address and phone number everywhere they appear.
  3. Set up a simple routine for asking for and replying to reviews.
  4. Add LocalBusiness schema to your site, plus other relevant types.
  5. Create useful pages for each key location and service.
  6. Write clear answers to the ten questions customers ask you most.
  7. Build a few genuine local links each quarter.
  8. Search for your business in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity and note what they say.

If you want quicker results while SEO builds, our post on Google Ads vs SEO explains how the two work together. For more on local community and tourism sites, see our piece on Donegal and Ardara.

FAQ

Is local SEO still worth it with AI Overviews?

Yes. AI answers and map results both rely on the same signals: a complete business profile, consistent details, reviews and useful pages. Good local SEO feeds directly into how AI tools describe you.

Can I pay to appear in AI answers?

You cannot buy a place in the organic AI summary itself. Google does show ads in and around AI Overviews in some markets, but the organic answer is earned through content, reputation and consistency.

How long does local SEO take?

Profile fixes can show results within weeks. Content, links and reputation build over months. It is a long term investment that keeps paying back.
