Google Ads vs SEO is one of the questions we get asked most by Irish businesses. Should you pay for ads or invest in ranking organically? Our honest answer: do both, but do not wait on SEO to pay the bills.
Here is why, and how to decide where your money goes first.
Google Ads vs SEO: the short version
- Google Ads puts you at the top of search results as soon as your campaigns are live. With a well thought out strategy and proper tracking, you can see traffic and sales from week one, and measure what every euro brings back.
- SEO builds visibility in the organic results over time. It is valuable and keeps working long after the effort is done, but results can take months and are harder to tie to a specific sale.
They are not rivals. They are two parts of the same plan, working on different timelines.
Why we lead with Google Ads
Most small businesses need enquiries now, not in six months. That is where Google Ads earns its place.
Direct traffic from day one
Once your account is set up and your ads are approved (Google reviews most ads within one business day), they can appear for the searches you choose. Someone in Dublin searching for your exact service can see you today, even if your website is brand new.
Measurable per euro
With conversion tracking in place, you can see which keywords, ads and locations bring calls, form fills, bookings and sales. You know your cost per lead and can decide what to scale and what to switch off.
Full control
You decide where ads show, when they run and how much you spend. Busy season? Turn it up. Fully booked? Turn it down. SEO does not have a dial like that.
Fast learning
Ads give you real search data quickly. You learn which phrases convert, which offers people respond to and which landing pages work. That knowledge feeds straight back into your SEO and content.
Why SEO is still worth doing
None of this means SEO is a waste. Far from it.
- It compounds. A strong page can bring visitors for years without paying per click.
- It builds trust. Many people trust organic results and reviews, and like to see a business in both places.
- It covers more questions. Guides and helpful pages reach people earlier in their research.
- It feeds AI search. Clear, well structured content is what Google AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT draw on, and Google says normal SEO best practices still apply. Our post on local SEO and GEO goes into this.
The catch is time. New pages need to be found, understood and trusted. In competitive markets that can take months, and it is often hard to say exactly which sale came from which page.
Ads only work if tracking works
The big promise of Google Ads is that it is measurable. That promise falls apart without good tracking.
Our work with Fastmoves is a clear example. Their ads were spending, but calls were not arriving in the account as conversions. That meant Google was optimising blind and nobody could tell which campaigns were really working.
We audited the account and fixed the conversion tracking so calls and enquiries were counted properly. Only then could real decisions be made about budgets, keywords and bids.
If you are running ads today, ask one simple question: can I see exactly which leads came from Google Ads last month? If the answer is no, fix that before spending more.
What good looks like: Dream Events
Dream Events uses Google Ads to bring in enquiries from people actively searching for event services. The ads put them in front of people at the moment of intent.
The second half of the story is speed. Enquiries are only worth something if they are answered quickly and well. That is why Dream Events also uses Reply Pilot, our human led AI tool. It connects to their Gmail and logs every enquiry in one place, so nothing slips through while the team is busy. Drafted replies, checked and sent by a person, are the next stage.
Ads bring the lead. A fast, personal reply turns it into a booking.
How to split your budget
There is no single right split, but this is how we usually think about it for a small Irish business.
- Get the website right. Fast, clear, mobile friendly and built to convert. Every euro of ads and every hour of SEO lands here. This is the core of how we build websites.
- Set up tracking. Calls, forms and bookings counted in GA4 and Google Ads.
- Launch focused Google Ads. Start with your highest value services and locations. Aim for leads and sales, not clicks.
- Build SEO steadily. Google Business Profile, service pages, location pages and helpful guides, using what the ads teach you.
- Rebalance over time. As organic traffic grows for certain terms, you may be able to spend less on ads there and move budget elsewhere.
When SEO should come first
There are a few cases where we would lean harder on SEO early:
- Very low search volume niches where ads have little to show.
- Markets where clicks are very expensive compared to the value of a sale.
- Content heavy businesses like publishers and tourism guides, where organic reach is the core model.
Even then, a small, tightly managed ads budget can be a useful testing ground.
Where to start
Check your tracking, look at what your current ads or website actually bring in, and decide what you need in the next three months versus the next three years. If you are wondering what management should cost, read our guide to Google Ads agency rates in Ireland, or see our Google Ads service.

FAQ
Is Google Ads better than SEO?
Not better. Faster and easier to measure. SEO takes longer but keeps paying back. Most businesses get the best results doing both, with ads carrying the load early on.
How quickly does Google Ads work?
Ads can show as soon as campaigns are live and approved. If you use automated bidding, expect a learning period of one or two conversion cycles, often a few weeks, while data builds and the account is refined.
Will running ads help my SEO?
Ads do not directly improve organic rankings. Google says no one can buy better placement in organic results. They do give you real keyword and conversion data, which helps you choose which pages and topics to invest in for SEO.
