The short answer: internal links are links from one page on your site to another. They help Google find and understand your pages, and they lead visitors to the pages that bring in work. Use link text that says where the link goes.

SEO in 60 seconds, episode 6. Watch and follow on Instagram

This is episode 6 of SEO in 60 seconds, our series of one fix per episode for small business websites. The full series sits in our on page SEO basics overview.

Why do internal links matter?

Google says every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page on your site. A key service page that only appears in your menu needs more.

What should the link text say?

Google lists “click here” and “read more” as bad examples. Good link text is descriptive, short and relevant.

  • Weak: To see our prices, click here.
  • Better: See our kitchen fitting prices.

A quick test from Google: read the link text on its own. If it doesn’t make sense, rewrite it.

What is the 10 minute job?

  1. Pick one service page that brings in work.
  2. Find 3 related pages or posts. Searching Google for site:yourdomain.ie plus the service name is a quick way.
  3. In each one, add a natural link to the service page inside a sentence.
  4. Add a link from your home page or your most read post if it fits.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Key pages only linked from the menu.
  • “Click here” and “read more” links.
  • Linking every second word. Google says there’s no ideal number, but too many is too many.
  • Links to old addresses that now redirect. Point them at the live page.

Give every page on your site one main search to win. When two pages chase the same search, Google has to pick one, and often neither does well. Merge pages that do the same job and redirect the old one.
