The short answer: your ad’s final URL should be the page that matches the ad. An ad about boiler repairs should land on your boiler repair page, not your homepage. Landing page experience is one of the three parts of Quality Score, so keep the message the same and make the page load fast.
This is episode 7 of SEM in 60 seconds, our series of one Google Ads fix per episode for sole traders and small businesses. The full series sits in our Google Ads basics overview.
What is a final URL?
Google defines the final URL as the address of the page on your website that people reach after they click your ad. It has to be on the same domain as the address shown in the ad.
Why does the page matter to Google?
Quality Score is a 1 to 10 rating for your keywords, built from 3 parts:
| Part | What it looks at |
|---|---|
| Expected clickthrough rate | How likely people are to click your ad |
| Ad relevance | How closely the ad matches the search |
| Landing page experience | How useful and relevant the page is once they click |
Each part is rated Above average, Average or Below average. Google says Quality Score itself isn’t an input in the auction. It’s a diagnostic that shows you where to improve.
What makes a good landing page for an ad?
- It matches the ad. An ad for boiler repair lands on boiler repair, with the same words in the main heading.
- The message stays the same. If the ad mentions same day call outs, the page does too.
- It loads fast on a phone. Most clicks are on mobile.
- The next step is obvious. A call button, a short form or a booking link near the top.
The same thinking works for search. Our SEO episode on one page, one main search covers giving each page one job.
How do you check landing page experience?
- Open Keywords in your campaign.
- Click Columns and add the Quality Score columns, including landing page experience.
- Look for keywords rated Below average, and check the page each one lands on.
If you use AI Max, its final URL expansion can send people to other pages on your site. Check that setting if you want every click on a set page.
What are the common mistakes?
- Every ad going to the homepage. People have to hunt for what they clicked on.
- An offer in the ad that isn’t on the page. Google calls out inconsistent promotions as a reason people leave.
- Slow pages and forms that don’t work on mobile. You pay for the click either way.
